PUTTING THE SPARK INTO LOCAL ARTS

An event to stir the imagination and return to the 80s (or thereabouts). Ballarat has always had a strong underground and alternative arts and music scene and this weekend we celebrate it with “Art Sparks at the Courthouse”.

This May 10th BAA (Ballarat Arts Alive) presents ‘Art Sparks at The Courthouse’, a showcase of some of the great music, performance, and graphic art of the last 20 or so years. The event is designed to fit in with the theme for this year’s Ballarat Heritage Weekend (stories of entertainment). Art Sparks is a series of events to bring artists together and to celebrate the arts in Ballarat and surrounds generally, that BAA has been running in various venues and locales to feature local artists.

Featuring luminaires of the local scene over the last few years with archival footage of iconic venues like the Bridge Mall Inn and Grainery Lane, live performance from Patrick McCabe and the Dead Salesmen Duo, films made at the time by Erin McCuskey, artworks by Kat Pengelly and Peter Sparkman, all hosted by local legends Rex Hardware and Amy Tsilemanis.

“It will be great to see all of Ballarat come out in celebration of all that has gone before, in support of cultural renewal in Ballarat and surrounds,” said Haydn Smith President of BAA. “our social history and its documentation is more important than ever,” he continued.

Ballarat’s art scene and the building of our cultural credentials has become a high priority for artists business people and the city officials, reinforcing such initiatives as MADE, recent festivals and the development of Ballarat as a core of cultural activity in Victoria if not Australia.

BAA (Ballarat Arts Live) has teamed up with the City of Ballarat Arts and Culture Unit and the UB Live Production Course to bring life to our social history for Art Sparks.

BAA (Ballarat Arts Alive) is an active and rapidly growing organisation of volunteers supporting discussion, advocacy, development and action around the arts in Ballarat and surrounds. Recently BAA sent four delegates to the Renew Australia Conference to learn of issues and possibilities around urban renewal and the important role of the arts in reinvigorating disused or underused space in cities, and the cultural and economic benefits of this activity. BAA is keen to apply this knowledge to further develop the cultural reputation of Ballarat and surrounds.
