ART SPARKS FEATURE ARTISTS BIOS DECEMBER 2013
Marlene Gilson is a painter who plays with angles and viewpoints to represent her country, or traditional lands. Her interplay between European framing of landscapes and animals and aerial views that imbue a spiritual quality, speaks to her cultural connection to place, which lives on in contemporary Ballarat. Marlene’s work has recently been exhibited as part of the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, as well as with The Ballarat Four at the Koorie Heritage Trust in Melbourne. We thank Aunty Marlene for Welcoming us to Country today. More here

Lucinda Horrocks is the co-director of Wind & Sky Productions, a company which specialises in short documentaries about history, culture, community and sustainability. She and her partner Jary Nemo work together as creative producers, developing their own story concepts and also taking on commissions. Between them Jary and Lucinda make a small but formidable film-making team. Their work reflects their desire to tell truthful, positive stories which engender social responsibility. Recent projects include the story of Bull Allen, the local Ballarat WW2 hero, and the moving ‘Reflections of Flood Recovery’ which focussed on the 2010 floods of Clunes and Creswick. You can watch their work online, as their films are almost always released using Creative Commons licensing. Today we screen their film about the Ballarat National Theatre. More here
Earl Leonard sings story-songs, heavy rock’n’roll, dark and stormy blues and joyful, energetic children’s music. His songs for adults have been described as sitting somewhere between the music of Cat Stevens and Tom Waits; considerate, literary, occasionally dark but ultimately uplifting. His children’s songs feature lots of jumping up and down. As a children’s entertainer, solo performer and member of the The Rye Catchers, The John Chamberlain Band and The Red Cents, Earl has toured all around Victoria, much of Australia and parts of the UK. He likes to keep busy. More here
