Q&A with Ballarat Artist Pauline O’Shannessy-Dowling

I caught up for a quick Q & A with local artist and BAA’er Pauline O’Shannessy- Dowling (aka POD) to find out a bit more about her practice and passions!
How long have you been in Ballarat and what is your creative practice?
I have been living in Ballarat for 10 years now. I am a visual artist; mainly involved in drawing, painting & writing, & the occasional experimentation with 3D works.
Can you tell us a bit about your role with the Art Gallery of Ballarat?
I am currently the Convenor of the Gallery Guides. The Gallery Guides are a great bunch of very dedicated art lovers who provided tours of the permanent collection & special exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Ballarat – this involves a lot of ongoing education & research. We also help organise the Lunch Time Talks at the Gallery.
And the upcoming Gallery Guides Exhibition?
This year we are celebrating 25 years of guiding at the Gallery. Our Director Gordon Morrison very generously suggested that we have an exhibition to celebrate this milestone. We will be exhibiting works that hold special meaning for the Guides – through an exhibition & trail through the Gallery. We will also have a beautiful catalogue that list the works & which provides a short history of the Gallery Guides. More info
What are you working on at the moment?
In terms of my art practice at the moment I am working on a commission to design 15 trees for a client; I am also preparing for the Ballarat Regional Arts Trail (BRATs) in October & the Pop-Up Shop In Nov/Dec; I also have another commission to start soon; I also have a “Tree of Life” workshop happening at the Art Gallery during the September school holidays; and some other projects that will be revealed at a later date 🙂
Where can people see your work?
People can see my work in the University of Ballarat Collection; St Patrick College Collection; St John of God Collection; St Patrick’s Primary School Collection; Ballarat Medical Centre (Drummond St); ArtsAtlas & of course, in my studio!
