Art Sparks – South Street Art Studio

On January 31st, sparks flew at the South St Art Studio as people enjoyed a tasty vegetarian feast provided by host Linda Franklin and featured work from Anne Langdon, Yasmin Cole, Al Wunder, Gordon Monro and Janette Wotherspoon. Listen here to a panel discussion with these wonderful folks.
January Program:
WELCOME to Art Sparks at Linda Franklin’s South St Art Studio with Vegetarian feasting, music, panel discussion, storytelling and visuals!
As part of Ballarat Arts Alive (BAA), Art Sparks – currently curated by Tinderbox Radio and supported by the City of Ballarat – are gatherings for the creative community of Ballarat and surrounds, featuring various local artists, venues and artforms.
They provide a chance to showcase work, form friendships and possible creative collaborations, discuss and debate, and spark ideas and creativity in casual but curated sessions.
See below for some questions to initiate discussion amongst yourselves that will also be used in the artist panel chat.
TONIGHT’S FEATURED ARTISTS:
Anne Langdon works across the various mediums of printmaking, painting, drawing, etching, ‘come what may’! She has been exhibiting for the last twenty years and is based in Smythesdale.
“Anne works in a figurative manner with her own dreamlike qualities that establish her original style.”
Her work is featured alongside Janette Wotherspoon, lecturer in Fashion and Textiles at RMIT.
Gordon Monro is a digital media artist based in Ballarat. He creates digital prints, abstract videos and computer-based installations and composed musical works, both computer-generated and for acoustic instruments. Gordon describes himself as a generative artist: much of his practice consists of writing computer programs that generate part or all of an artwork.
Gordon’s works have been exhibited or performed in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and the Americas, and broadcast nationally in Australia. He is currently undertaking a PhD in the Faculty of Art and Design at Monash University in Melbourne, working in generative art.
Yasmin Cole is an Emerging Artist whose oil paintings feature fabric as a metaphor for the soulful life. Most recently, Yasmin has begun to explore the idea of feminine identity, through chiaroscuro drawings and lace-printing.
Al Wunder has been shaping his creative practice and philosophy for the last 30 years through a form of Improvised Movement Theatre. He began dancing in New York City when he was 19 and has since been developing his interest in the idea of improvised performance. “We all have our own stories, songs and dances to share with each other and it is this sharing that enriches us” He currently facilitates improvised movement classes in Ballarat alongside his own unique performance blend of music and storytelling.
FOR DISCUSSION (suggested by Jade Standing)
- Most vivid childhood recollection?
- A powerful lesson you have learnt that has influenced the practice of your artform?
- Most commercially successful moment
- Childhood ambition
- Describe one of your own works and explain why it means a lot to you
- What has been either your most subversive or responsible act as an artist?
- What is your day job?
- What is a key source of inspiration?
- What is a moment of extreme pride?
- Recall and describe a beautiful memory
- What is a favourite destination?
- One of the aims of these gatherings is to bring local artists into appreciation of one another’s work. With this in mind, what do you hope to see at other Art Sparks gatherings further down the line? (and let Amy know!)
- Please jot down any questions you would like Jade to ask the artists during the panel session and hand them to her.
